What’s that sound, indeed? Since the Old 97’s/Lydia Lunch certainly wasn’t and the Titus Andronicus/Buzzcocks missed by that much, the Deer Tick, the Hold Steady and The Replacements Forest Hills gig on Friday may well prove to eb the rock show of the year except, I don’t much like Deer Tick and the Hold Steady’s last album was a dog and… the Replacements? Nearly all my rock critic peers worship this band and I don’t so I’m going in needing to be convinced.
Monday – John Cooper Clarke – Bowery Poetry – the poet laureate of punk rock UK ain’t no summer of love, in his element.
Monday – Lorde – United Palace – If she can kill it at Roseland, as she did earlier this year, she should be magnificent at this gorgeous venue. PS: Magical Cloudz are a pretty good electronic duo from Canada.
Tuesday – Clean Bandit – Webster Hall – EDM goes classical!
Thursday – Ellen Foley – Iridium – The former Hair later Meat Loaf and current rocker at a great venue… if you haven’t heard it, try last years About Time.
Thursday – United Palace – Sam Smith – The best newcomer of the year and how, this is a huge gig for me, I was seconds for dubbing it the concert of the week. I can’t wait.
Friday – The Weeknd – Barclay Center – The last time I saw him, it was a revelation. He couldn’t have been livelier or more fun. A real soul man.
Saturday – Charles Aznavour – Theater At Madison Square Garden – “sheeeeeee may be the mirror of my dream…”. A busy day, I dropped the Drums to pick up Wu Tang Clan but in retrospect I should check out the legendary French singer. I saw him at at Carnegie Hall in 1995 and he was superb. Charles is 90 years old this year and I expect no less.
Saturday – The Drums – Bowery Ballroom – They’re back and not as great as ever but pretty damn good
Saturday – Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds – The Town Hall – Alyson will be happy for us!! Me, I thought he sucked the last time I saw him.
Saturday – Wu Tang Clan – Barclay Center – The Diplos are there as well and the only thing missing is ODB
Sunday – King Crimson – Best Buy Theatre – Back to the court
Sunday – Shinobi Ninja – Studio At Webster Hall – They have a very good new album and are one of the best live bands in the city,
