With one of the best albums of the year to his name, Before This World, you might be hoping for hits plus the newbie from Taylor, who sure knows how to shower the people with love and singalongs. But the setlist has been going deeper than usual with lost gems from Gorilla, Walking Man, October Road and That’s Why I’m Here, alongside “How Sweet It Is” and “You’ve Got A Friend”. I know what you’re thinking but you missed the word “gems”. The restroom break will be “Angels Of Fenway” at Forest Hills Stadium on Tuesday.
Monday: Beautiful In Concert – Central Park SummerStage – For the first time, a current Broadway show, with the current cast as well, will be performed “In Concert” (AKA just the songs, ma’am), so expect all those great early Goffin-King songs plus… hopefully that piano and voice “Walking In The Rain”
Monday – Laura Marling – Town Hall – How do you follow up in a flat out masterpiece? With great difficulty apparently because going electric doesn’t seem to be doing it.
Monday – Amy Helm – Drom – The set went on for too long yesterday, but still, she is a soulful Americana star and absolutely her father’s daughter.
Monday – Mike Posner – The Studio At Webster Hall – He took a pill in Ibiza but he’ll be buried in Detroit.
Tuesday – KMFDM – Irving Plaza – Industrial metal rockers, same as it ever was.
Tuesday – J. Cole: Forest Hills Drive Tour – Madison Square Garden – I didn’t like the album either, but he was great on stage when I saw him last year.
Tuesday – Saint Motel – Bowery Ballroom – Glam salsa dance coolness from LA
Wednesday – Miguel – Bowery Ballroom – With the r&b album of the year to his name, check him out at the indie venue if you can find a ticket.
Wednesday – One Direction – Metlife – If the new single is a disappointment, and if the Pakistani kid will be missed, and if their moment in the sun has passed… wait a second, why am I going again?
Wednesday – Christopher Paul Stelling – The Living Room – Alt folk singer songwriter who builds his own guitars and stamps his feet most powerfully is very entertaining live. I haven’t seen him since I interviewed him and it might be worth a visit.
Friday – Justin Townes Earle – MHOW – One of those guys who doesn’t write bad songs -live he can be spottier.
Sunday – Iris Dement – Lincoln Center – Nothing at this years Lincoln Outdoor Fest really did it for me this year, especially since I blew off (because the emails approving my press credentials went into spam and I missed them) everything Lincoln Center offered me and they got pissed. So, yeah, even Randy Newman I passed on. However this 3pm show? Simply the best singer songwriter folk Christian woman on earth. For free? You would be insane to miss it.
