On Friday, Lady Gaga released a new song and video to raise awareness about sexual violence on campuses. ‘Till It happens to You’ was co-written by Canadian songwriter Diane Warren, and the lush and sad ballad makes me think about something Lana Del Rey does, except that the tunes has a real goal, it’s not about someone’s vague states of minds, it’s about rape and women who have been victims of sexual assaults around the world, and it was recorded for campus rape documentary ‘The Hunting Ground’.
‘We hope u feel our love & solidarity through the song & perhaps find some peace in knowing u r not alone through this film,’ tweeted Lady gaga.
The video, which was directed by Catherine Hardwicke, (Twilight, Thirteen) is well done, not too graphic but you do see rape scenes, involving quite beautiful people. Yeah there’s nobody ugly in that video.
‘One in five college women will be sexually assaulted this year unless something changes.’ It says at the end of the video, and Lady Gaga has always been outspoken about the subject as she has herself being sexually assaulted at the age of 19. In these days and age, when rock icon Chrissie Hynde criticizes the way women dress and puts the blame on rape victims, it’s important to see a woman stand up for other women. However I have other problems with Lady Gaga… ‘A portion of proceeds from the song will be donated to organizations working with survivors of rape and sexual assault’, this is good, but why ‘a portion’? Could they give everything? Plus why did Gaga make a video with rapist R Kelly a while ago? Doesn’t this cross out any effort she may do to raise awareness against rape?
