Karmin “Hello” Video, Reviewed

I’ve written before about how the vivacious duo Karmin seemed to strike gold with their single “Brokenhearted”, yet let me down with their latest album Hello. However, I didn’t want to think that Karmin had peaked with “Brokenhearted”. I was hoping something better would come along. But with their video for “Hello”, I don’t see much hope for Karmin. When reviewing the album, Hello, I found that the title track was one of the most boring, disappointing parts of the album and unfortunately, the video hasn’t seemed to make any improvements.

Obviously the song itself wouldn’t have changed for the video but I was hoping to understand the song a little better after having seen the music video. Upon first listening to “Hello” you’re initially confused by the lyrics that don’t exactly seem to have a purpose. The video features Karmin’s vocalist Amy Heidemann riding her bike, and then strutting, through the beautiful Chinatown of some city. The only role Karmin’s other member, Nick Noonan, seems to play is shaving his head and then picking up Amy at the end ofthe video in a nice red sports car.

That is, essentially, the video; there is no other action and no other type of performance than Amy singing “Hello” as she tromps around Chinatown. You can see why I still don’t really understand what the song is about. With a chorus saying “I'ma do it, do it like I wanna do it. You gon'know me like, you ain't never known me before. I'ma bring it, bring it, I'magive it, give it, You gon' love me like you ain't loved nobody before”, I expected maybe some sort of performance or party in which Karmin, or at least Amy, would show off and be better than before? Maybe someone needs to prove themselves?

I don’t know. And frankly I don’t really care. The song and video are both bland and annoying. When, or if, there are videos for the other songs on Hello, I won’t be expecting much better. If Karmin peaked with “Brokenhearted”, they’re going to need to do a lot better than the “Hello” video to get some popularity back.
