We have just entered a new season so this new song by Lael Neale seems to be the perfect one to celebrate the summer solstice.‘Born In The Summer’ is a dynamic folksy ballad with Lael’s emotional bird-like croon floating along a lo-fi neo-psychedelia. Despite its title, the tune has nothing to do with your usual summer jam anthem we are used to, it rather flirts with gloom as its slow beginning has a sort 70’s vibe, sounding like a barely more upbeat version of the Velvet’s ‘Venus in Furs’. Then there is Lael’s crystalline voice, which confirms her as the songstress who will save us from darkness.
‘Born in the Summer’ is inspired by those early adolescent years of feeling awkward in your own skin and painfully self-conscious, yet knowing that someday those growing pains will recede, explains the press release.
The song is also the 8th track of Lael’s forthcoming album, ‘I’ll Be Your Man’, set to be released on July 10th. When I asked Lael why she chose this title, she laughed and said ‘I guess it’s gonna be a question I will have to answer very often’. Surely, her blonde, blue-eyed pretty face and frail frame doesn’t make you think about a man at all, but the bold title may be a way to affirm herself as a female songwriter in this men’s world
