Joyce Manor "Schley" Track Review

Joyce Manor
Joyce Manor

Joyce Manor released a new song called “Schley”, and it’s phenomenal.  One of the longer and slower tunes they’ve ever released, the new track a part of their upcoming third studio album, “Never Hungover Again” shows a side of Joyce we’ve only been able to get glimpses of with previous ballads like “Drained” and glimpses in songs like “5 Beer Plan”, and “My Elise”.

Barry’s voice really takes center stage with this piece, and the bass line is a close second.  It’s pretty bare bones and laid back, but when the lead guitar kicks in, it gains even more depth and the riff is unique and unlike anything the band’s ever produced before, but I love it.  It’s so odd and shows them expanding their horizons, which is awesome to see.  The harmonies and minimal scratchy vocals make this song really listenable for even the casual fan, but also shows diehards that the band isn’t just there for fast punk music, though they’re damn good at that, too.
It seems to be getting mixed reviews from the fan base, people saying that they wish it was faster or had more elements to it, but I think JM has made a smart move in putting something totally different out there before their new record comes out.  They’re obviously proud of how it came out, and how it’s the complete opposite from what anyone expected.  It’s a Joyce Manor song your mom won’t hate if you play it in the car, and that’s pretty sweet of them to do.
