A spankin new column by yours truly using the song title from the obscure Van Pelts (which I should actually review at some point) but today I got a ‘you should try’ message from Spotify again.  These bots really are know it alls.  ‘Hey I saw you listened to Elvis Costello you should try.. The Divine Comedy”.

So I say….what the hell.. and then I said WHAT THE HELL? The Divine comedy has been in existence since 1989 recording since 1991 and I have never heard a damn thing they have played.  The track recommended “At The Indie Disco” is a generic pop tune with Brit voice and a really annoying girl back up.  It’s cute though, name dropping Morrissey and Stone Roses.  But its really a grasp just to make a list.  I suppose the Sloaneys get let out a squeak when they hear their band announced.

I do really like Neil Hannons voice. Neil the only real member of the band (maybe no one likes him cuz he’s so hip?)  there are times when you sounds very much like Ray Davies.  It’s in those moments that I really think I’m going to dig TDC.  But then suddenly they end up sounding like a Broadway musical  Over dramatizing words leaves me rather blegh.

That being said the dong is a cute one but if you care enough I suggest you go one cut deeper on the album ‘Bang Goes The Kingdom”.  The song ” Have you Ever Been In Love?”, is absolutely adorable.  Spotify was off by one.  This one is the keeper with a catchy hook and a nice tempo change.  A cool story with a fun brushy drum stick.  Yeah.  Lyrically fabulously done.  A bit cracky on the vocals but meh- minor flaw.
