In 2012, and despite a lousy live show, I called Justin Townes Earle’s Nothing’s Gonna Change The Way You Feel About Me Now the album of the year and though we are only two songs deep into Earle’s September 9th, 2014 Single Mothers, they are both masterpieces and let me go out on a limb here and say, the new Earle has all the hallmarks of a masterpiece as well.

The first time I saw Justin at Joe’s Pub, 2010 maybe, I went to check out Steve’s little boy, see if he has the goods. Which he did. He was funny and fun and I liked him a lot. I remember now, he was pushing The Good Life, a pretty good effort. But it took the almost easy sway of the heartbreaker brilliance suicide watch “Am I That Lonely?” to turn me from an observer to a fan in 2012.

The two singles  off the new album are both as good as anything but the best on the last one. “White Gardenia” feels like a Southern dream of a song, all slide guitar and swaying beauty, a beauty of a song which seems to twirl in your imagination like a backdrop to a plantation, in Baltimore? “I don’t know where she goes when she’s sleeping and I don’t know who she sees when she’s sleeping”. What a great image, what a strange thought.

“Time Shows Fools” is if anything better, a laid back country rocker so beautiful that when you hear it once you wanna hear it a thousand times. in Brad Paisley’s greatest dream could he play a solo with the restraint of the one here, and when Justin wants to push the eotional lever, all he does in sing a little deeper.

Two glorious gorgeous songs, I can not wait. Is this sucker streaming somewhere?
