In this spot was to go our interview with unsigned crunkcore band Blood on The Dance Floor. Tuesday November 8, the band played the Webster Underground in Hartford CT. A small stage venue that holds less than 200. There was a great line outside the venue when we arrived. Although not sold out- it was a large crowd. I was encouraged cuz nothing is worse than a half empty club it just makes me feel bad since I understand the diligence it takes to 'make it'
I am a strong believer in supporting the underdog.
A band since 2008, founding member Dahvie Vanity has had more wing men than Rock Hudson, not sure why- but he is the only constant. The band plays upbeat party music with a sense of humour. I wouldn't call them epic or trendsetting by any means. There have been many before them, from the New York Dolls To Sique Sique Sputnick, their only redemption is that their fans are too young to realize it- so that's a huge benefit.
We were informed that we would be speaking with Dahvie and to be honest with you I felt that the best fit. He seems articulate is technically the mastermind of the band and from the research I had done in preparation for our talk was a humble and sincere diva. I wanted to support them- I wanted to spread the word and give them an opportunity to right some rumours that follow them.
That unfortunately didn't happen.
Upon waiting to speak to the band the second half of the band, Jayy Von Monroe, decided it would be far more fun to flash a bit of sassy to impress his preteen fans and their parents. Here is a tip, when you see an adult outside your bus chances are pretty good they're not groupies. I suggest that strutting in their face and shaking your chest may not be a successful business move.
You are in a business, you are selling yourself.
To be arrogant and flip, if not rude and trying to show how well you werrrrrrrrrrrk, you came across as a silly little boy in Edward Scissorhands hand me downs. At that moment I had a judgement call to make. Do I stick around to see if that theatrics were really a glimpse of who the band was? Offer Vanity a chance to change my mind- or simply walk away and with the knowledge that the 200 person capacity club will never be a sell out, not based on talent but rather based on the fact that this band is more of a vehicle for self inflated ego rather than a sincere desire to succeed in a business that has seen this all before.
I suppose their die hard fans will defend them to tooth and nail and I encourage them to do so- they need their fans desperately.
Best of luck BOTDF- enjoy the ride.
