Human Kitten is not a good thing to listen to when you’re feelin’ down in the dumps, or if you’re in a good mood. Your day might as well just end as soon as you hear ’em. However, I absolutely love HK, and he posted a cover of Ramshackle Glory’s “First Song”. This guy needs way more attention- he’s a genius.
The cover is beautiful. It’s not easy to cover Ramshackle, especially since Pat has such a strange voice. However, Elijah totally nails it. His guitar skills are spot-on, and his voice just fits it. He has a fantastic range, and I like this cover just as much as the original. I got chills listening to it- it’s completely perfect.
His original work is just as great. “I Don’t Want To Be Sad” is a soul-crushing, terrifyingly honest and sad song. “I’m always so lonely, frustrated, and angry and I never know if it’s my fault or if it’s just my brain working fucking wrong, ’cause I have got problems that I cannot withhold ’cause I have got diseases that I cannot control.” It’s just so up front and stark, and causes immediate self-reflection.
“And my feelings are at the mercy of my chemical imbalances and I’m trapped inside the torture of living with bipolar disorder.” He really puts the whole ‘mental illness’ bit into an understandable and relatable light. Even the average joe who doesn’t really know much about depression or anything of the sort can get a grip on it.
The next line is a punch in the gut. “I’ll always hate myself before I hate anyone else ’cause I know I have earned it from years and years of treating myself like shit.” The first time I heard this, my jaw dropped. It’s just so articulate and simple, and is such a bold statement. It requires a lot of strength to say something like that.
