In May 2009, rock nyc had been up a month and I was fond of "Paparazzi", so I tried to get a tix to see Lady Gaga at T5/ It was sold out. But then she added a late night show and a hmmmd and I haaaaad and finally decided to buy a tix. And it was also sold out. A friend of mine went and he told me it was the best show he'd ever seen (I tried to convince him to write about it… but noooo)
I immediately began obsessing over Lady Gaga and by the time I heard about her Radio City Music Hall gigs in February 2010, I promised myself a ticket. And I missed it again (because my niece wanted to go and I was trying for two not one) so when I heard Gaga was playing in Hartford, I contacted my Conn connect (and my co-editor) Helen Bach. who got me VIP tix. And LG cancelled due to exhaustion.
The MSG gig a coupla months later, I had GREAT tix and cancelled because I was ill.
Which left me at Prudential Center earlier this year. Here is an excerpt from my review: "Look: all this fucking around, all this Monsters stuff, all this interruption, all these stage drop and dancers: they don't save you from performing a fucking set. Shut your fucking face and sing.I paid sixty bucks for these nose bleed sideviews in the middle of nowhere DO YOUR JOB."
This wasn't the first time, LG lost her shine for me.
Earlier, there had been a terrible remix album (why is she so bad at remixes, the current album features a remix by Foster The People…) and a stupid video. And of course, the truly awful Born This Way, a mistep of epic proportions. Still, it took that additional chorus on "White Christmas" for her to lose all semblance on cool. Follow that with her embarrassing Vanity fair interview (whining about how she'll never fall in love) and Gaga is officially uncool.
Why does she exist? To remind us how great Madonna was? It took Madonna years and years to become a self-parody, over a decade. Sure, there was "Dick Tracy" but that was a rare mistep. In 1998, later career, there was Ray Of Light, and later still Music. Does the name William Orbit mean anything? Can you imagine Lady gaga being that on top of the zeitgeist 20 years into her career? Let alone on her next album?
Sure it's early in her career but LG is back to ground zero for me. She will have to prove it all again.
