Looking at someone’s mp3 player is the equivalent of looking into a girl’s diary.
There are some things in there you just may not want to see. Other things she may just die knowing someone has discovered.
I got to thinking about this when I noticed a lot of ‘lemme see’s” over the holiday break. Seems everyone wants a glimpse into what you’re listening too.
Take your friends, throw all the mp3 players on a table, and see if you can decipher whose is whose, I bet you’d do pretty well.
Mine of course is filled with 80s punk 90s emo 2000’s hardcore, some whacked out indy crap, creepy techno and…..
Steely Dan and the Moody Blues
I have loved Steely Dan since I was a kid, I have never seen them live nor do I ever want to now. I think this may come from my sibling’s love of them but Becker and Fagen freaking ruled. The music alone was amazing to me add the lyrics (which made no sense) and you have an instant love. WTF is a Bodhisattva anyway? From Countdown to Ecstasy to The Royal Scam I’m in like flynn after that, nah Ill pass, but 73-76 Steely were amazing. The harmony and again my obsessions with layers of sound are never more clearly defined than in “Any World (that I’m welcome to)” It’s like a speed train into polyester Garanimals to me. 23 years later in heavy rotation. And a sentiment I still feel. The cover art on Katy Lied still scares me, I remember turning it over as a kid so I wouldn’t have to look at it. I find this to be a strong album but my favorite has to be Pretzel Logic, I hated “Rikki Don’t Lose that Number’’ but the rest was perfection, especially “Any Major Dude”. I nearly get a contact high listening to it. Again, music transports me; this one apparently takes me to a hash den.
Moody Blues same deal. I am overpowered by the ramp up in the “The Story in Your Eyes”; I have belted this song out in my personal in car concerts. I actually think I may have shattered a speaker on this one. “Ride My See Saw” is another killer song. I hear they suck live. Doesn’t matter, they’re another band I would never want to see live. I missed the glory days and I hate the whole ‘legend’ thing. Id rather keep them 20years old in recording than to hear the frailty that time causes.
Though now that I type that I sorta had that crushed when I saw Tull a few months ago.. hmm…
Although “Nights in White Satin” was sorta nifty all that spoken word sorta offed me Best of the lot? 1972 Seventh Sojourn. Containing ‘Isn’t Life Strange’ and “You and Me’. They should have never done the 80s but they did and stuff like “Wildest Dreams’ annoy me. They should have stayed 60s-70s.
So there you have it.
I feel so exposed.
