The FYF Fest, the music festival which takes place at the Los Angeles State Historic Park in downtown LA during the Labor Day weekend, has started to tease us with its line-up for 2011.
Without revealing too much, they sent a series of tweets giving a few hints, not that helpful I would say.
First they revealed the first letter of every band playing:
"FPTPTTFTCTANDCMSJSOESCOWYDEGFHNKSGDGBDC" Have fun guessing!!!
Yeah, have fun, it’s pretty impossible to guess with one letter…
One other hint was ‘County Line’, so could it be Mayer Hawthorne and the County? It would be too easy since the other ones were so cryptic, and Mayer does not really fit in the Indie punk FYF fest. No, no, Cass McCombs has a song called ‘County Line’, it makes much more sense.
This other hint may be a given: ‘Not one but two bands are playing FYF that share this zip code- M6K 1L4. Can you guess?’
It’s the zip code of Toronto,… so one of these bands could be Fucked up? I totally see them there. But they also said these bands have never played FYF Fest, and Fucked up already has,… so other possibilities Death From Above 1979? Broken Social Scene?
They also tweeted a picture of some satanic cult, so could the band Cult be playing too? Or could it be the UK band Salem?
I tried to look around to make sense of all these hints, like this one: ‘A sign on a popular street in Los Angeles reads this band name in neon letters. Do you want to know the street?
Someone suggested ‘Girls’ because of the neon sign of a strip club on Sunset boulevard,… not a bad guess because another hint says one of the bands is from San Francisco.
The ‘O’s could be for OFF! (Keith Morris is good friends with founder Sean Carlson) or the unavoidable OFWGKTA?
Descendents is a possibility for the band from Hermosa Beach, another of these hints…
One last hint, ‘the two headliners for FYF start with a D. Just sayin’, so yes, Death From Above 1979 and the Descendants make sense. But who knows?
So all these wild guesses were fun, and then I found this scan of Spin magazine confirming Death From Above 1979, Girls and the Descendants!
