If you are like me, you don’t really enjoy Christmas music, I would even say I despise most of it, and it has nothing to do with the religious aspect of it. How many times can you still hear that Holiday Muzac blasted over the speakers in every single mall for two months? How many Kenny-G-ized version of whatever Christmas tune he has chosen to record for the thousandth times can you still endure? I have a solution for you.
Super Furry Animal Gruff Rhys has announced details of his alternative, Atheist Xmas EP to be released on December 19th, just in time for Christmas.
The EP is described as ‘an unholy trinity of three turkey-free new tracks for the festive season’, and the three songs successively as a ‘Motown-tinged’ in which ‘Gruff is re-imagining the ‘Winterval’ through the semi-melted eyes of a nuclear holocaust survivor’, a ‘humanist hymn’ which ‘deploys lush vocal harmonies, saxophone and also features in the soundtrack for Jesus And Mary Chain bassist Douglas Hart’s semi-autobiographical short film, Long Distance Information’, and a ‘mournful piano ballad and curtain closer’ which ‘addresses the seasonally taboo subjects of manic depression and suicide.’
The track list is hilarious, and only reading the titles of these songs will sure cheer you up just in time for the season:
1. Post Apocalypse Christmas
2. At the End of the Line
3. Slashed Wrists This Christmas
