Poor Grimes, may be she read my review (yeah, right!) at least she read some reviews and listened to her fans…. and she heard them. After releasing her new single ‘Go’ and a video to go with it, the reaction was not positive at all. The tune sounded too much like this Rihanna radio-friendly mainstream R&B to be even remotely interesting – not very surprising as the song was originally written for Rihanna.
‘It upsets a lot of my fans, and I get why it upsets them,” Boucher told New York Times Magazine, ‘ Everybody was like, ‘Oh, Grimes is pandering to the radio.’’
But this is not the most shocking part of the declaration, she also said she has scraped her entire album which should have been the follow-up to her beloved 2012 ‘Visions’, and she is starting to record the album all over again: ‘It sucked, so I threw it out and started again’.
‘I’d been [recording] in Vancouver, very reclusive, not seeing anyone . . . kind of stewing by myself,’ she added. ‘That’s always worked for me in the past.’
She is now in Los Angeles where she’s ‘hanging out with people and bouncing ideas off my friends. I’m just making way more music.’
‘I took my advance and I used it to have my own studio. Recording in professional studios is the worst idea — I don’t know why anybody even does it . . . they’re so expensive.’
Poor Grimes, she took a few slaps on the face but she doesn’t seem to give up. First she wanted to withdraw from the spotlight and write songs for others. ‘I thought, Oh, I don’t want to be a front person,’ she said. ‘I want to write.’ Thus, she wrote this song for Rihanna, but Rihanna didn’t put it on her album. So Grimes records it, and she received this backlash from her fans, which makes her doubt of the whole album!
And, as if it wasn’t enough for the 26-year-old, she also got criticized for refusing the A.L.S. ice-bucket challenge, although she did it for two good reasons: the severe drought in California, and her opposition to animal testing… ‘and all these people with A.L.S. were like, ‘You’re the worst person ever.’ I was crying for days,’ she said.
Grimes should not worry so much, she is loved, I saw her in concert a couple years ago, and I have rarely seen so much love demonstrated by a public during a performance, a young guy almost broke his neck to give her flowers… Plus, she hangs out with the wrong people, PETA people would be very proud of her she refused to support an association which funds animal testing. May be the rest of the album was not so bad (and some people actually loved ‘Go’), may be she just has to listen to the right people.
