First there was American Idiot, the album. Green Day’s faux punk anthemic release that created more fans than imaginable and completely screwed what punk was meant to be. Antiseptic bleached out nonsense.
Then they took that and made it in to a Broadway show- thus watering it down even more. Wait, though cuz it gets worse. As a musical it received glorious reviews and tons of press and toured the country and oh how lovely.
According to the PR babble “The pop-punk opera tells the story of three lifelong friends–St. Jimmy, Tunny and Will aka Jesus of Suburbia–forced to choose between their dreams and the safety
of suburbia and features Green Day hits like “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “21 Guns,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends” and “Holiday.”” Pop-punk- enough said.
But hey that’s not enough. Next up? Well next is not a movie adaptation but rather a ‘how they did it’ film The movie ‘Broadway Idiot” shows the process of making the album into a theatrical musical. My question—why?
The film also will explain the process of taking Billie Armstong from singer to actor. Another enourmous, WHY? The 80-minute film, which debuted at South by Southwest earlier this year, will hit theaters Oct. 11 in New York before expanding its run to other U.S. cities and Canada a week later. More info on the screenings over at the Broadway Idiot site.
Wonder what next. One thing is for sure it’s proving people are idiots for following this from media to media.
