Is there a better indie around than True Groove? Maybe Don Giovanni, maybe Bridgetown Records, but as a really, really real indie? That’s the only other two that comes to mind. Sub-Pop, Merge, all those kinds are deep into the majors for distribution. Too deep to be considered really real indies.

So despite Tomas being a great guitarist, songwriter, record producer, band leader and all round good guy as well as a true groove friend of mine (who namechecked me on Power Of Trinity… A Slight Return), he is also the last of the independents: he lives and breathes music and his music matters.

If that sounds like a testimonial, well, so be it.

Here is the press release for his eagerly awaited record release party and with the entire True Groove family there (and YES, there is the Ethiopian Hendrix Selam Woldamariam down from DC) and two sets, an 8pm and a 1030pm,  I can’t wait to check a full fledged Doncker Band gig at last.

Here is the press release. Be there.

The Tomas Doncker Band, Marla Mase, Kevin Jenkins, Lael Summer,Selam Woldemariam & Betty G to perform at True Groove Label Launch(In support of Studio Samuel Foundation) New York City Global soul icon Tomas Doncker is launching his True Groove record label with a multi-CD release featuring 4 of the label’s artists on Monday, September 9 at The Blue Note on West 3rd Street in the Village.

“The Tomas Doncker Band have had a busy year, with 2 EP’s under their belt, and they will be celebrating the new “Power of the Trinity…A Slight Return” EP(Featuring Ethiopian Guitar Hero Selam Seyoum Woldemariam, and rising star Betty G). Kevin Jenkins, a famed bassist who has opened for the likes of Michael Jackson and The Police, has set out on his own as a frontman with his new CD “Step Inside”, produced by Doncker. Marla Mase, who is fresh off the heels of two major Summerstage appearances and promoting February’s critically acclaimed “SPEAK” CD, will also perform. Rounding out the evening is True Groove’s newcomer, Lael Summer, who is preparing for the release of her debut full-length “Burden to Bear”.

The ethos of the label can be found in a statement from Doncker about  his “global soul” movement; “Global Soul: The sound of our collective consciousness. The unified rhythm of heart beats creating a positive, spiritually uplifting force for good. Musically speaking it is not genre specific, but in fact genre
inclusive. It is the best of what we have to offer to each other, from Brooklyn
to Ethiopia, and every where in Between.”

This multiple CD Release/Label Launch extravaganza is in support of Studio Samuel Foundation’s 1Hundred Girls
initiative.(www.studiosamuel.org), an organization that is doing wonderful work with girls in Ethiopia.
