After a fast start ABC Network’s Fast Forward has been treading water for the past month till a shoot out at the conclusion of episode 5 blasted it into the hemisphere. The very surprising conclusion, on a show that seemed to have devolved into sci-fi procedural, came with a kick to the gut conclusion with the death of a major character.
The conclusion was set to a cover version of Dylan’s “Like A Rolling Stone” and I know what you’re thinking because I’m thinking the same thing but in choosing a fast and loose cover which doesn’t go the jugular the way the original did, the director allows us to be aware of the big trouble the lead performers are in without distracting us from the images.
Very strong meat and not the first time. The best thing about Episode 4 was the opening set to Bjork’s “It’s Oh So Quiet” (you can check out my post a week or so ago) but as good as that was, the use of the Dylan did something very difficult: it made an exciting and then shocking scene that much better.
