Sad isn't it. The iconic guitarist Gary Moore of the band Think Lizzy passed away and nearly a year later this is what his tribute is. There is no indication of who is buried here other than the small wooden fan made cross that is staked in the ground.
Now I am no fan of burial memorial- you're dead, then then its time to stop taking up space. I don't visit graves nor do I hold vigil. Once dead- its all just..done. But for those who find solace in having a 'place' to pay respects- there is no respect here. The site actually looks like a roadside memorial to a car crash victim, not the final resting place of an icon of rock and roll. Whatever the reason, if you chose to bury your dead, at least keep it tidy.
A spokesperson for the family of Moore claim poor weather for the lack of pageantry “A headstone is currently being made, as arranged by Gary’s family,” said the spokesman in a statement. “It does take some time for the ground, following a burial, to settle and to be able to support a headstone or memorial piece. But with the continuing wet weather, this has added to the time that the ground is taking to settle.”
A fan stated:
“When I went to look for Gary Moore’s grave at the parish church, it took me ages to find. Having been to Pere Lachaise in Paris recently and visited Jim Morrison’s grave, I was expecting some sort of original memorial, maybe a guitar in stone. Just as I was giving up I found it tucked away against a back wall with no obvious markings. The little black scarf draped on the cross probably was what caught my eye. The grave was not delineated or looked after — there were lots of fallen leaves not swept up. “I was really disappointed and thought it looked neglected.”
