FYF Fest Day One: Punk Music, Heat, Dust And Inspiration

The first day of the FYF Fest was a very intense one, with hot temperatures and dust risen from mosh pits as usual, but overall a well organized party with many water stations, even free tap water largely available – they had learned a lesson from 2010, and it was already under control last year. May be it is turning into a mini Coachella, it looks more and more like one this year, with a lot of stuff beside the four stages, like for example these girls in sexy black outfits spraying cold air on people with futuristic gun, or these giant sunglasses glowing in the dark. There were many ways to have fun and to cool down between the bands' sets.

People had adopted the 'renegade' look – organizers had distributed free bandanas with the names of all the bands written on it – and guys were wearing them across the face to protect themselves against dust, or just to look cool… of course there were many bands t-shirts, with lots of Trash Talk, Ramones, all kind of variations on the Black Flag theme (a favorite of mine was ‘black fag’) and curiously many Bill Murray’s head.

The festival was not too crowded at the beginning of the afternoon, which was really nice, but of course it changed after 5-6 pm…. In 10 hours (yes I know it is insane), I managed to see Fidlar, Moonface, Cloud Nothings, Fucked Up, Warpaint, Sleigh Bells, Quicksand, Refused, and parts of the sets of the Soft Pack, King Tuff, Redd Kross, Two Gallants, Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, and M83…I fought with an obnoxious fat girl who pushed me and stole my spot during Sleigh Bells, and I survived Refused’s set but couldn’t believe the ruins left on the battle field afterward… I am totally exhausted, but I have to go back for another day!

However, it was worth is, only for Fucked Up’ s Damian Abraham reminding us that we always had the possibility to move to caring Canada depending on the results of these elections, or Refused’s frontman giving a few inspirational discourses especially about not letting anybody tell us how to live our life… Now let's head to day two of the best weekend of the summer!
