Is it too late for the song of the summer stakes? I guess so because laugh riot gal about town Samantha Urbani gets heard on Friends new song “The Way” (a Taoist reference of course), the world at large will either have a snooze or flip out.
MTV made it a buzzworthy track so I guess they are joining me firmly on the flip out side of the ledger. The whiplash synth is dark and moody and Samantha’s vocals are beautiful modulated sound rifts, plus then, there is a guitar solo by Slash. No really.
Friends have been blowing rock nyc away for a coupla years now, despite a lacklustre show at Bowery Ballroom leading to a cooling of the heels. That cooling off period is now absolutely over and it is time to embrace our inner Samantha Urbani, the wiseass lead singer who claimed to be dating a 1D on twitter one day, and married to her guitarist the next.
This lack of seriousness makes Samantha a poster girl for hedonia , a fun seeking missile going right in the face of self-seriousness… but not musically. “The Way” is a big song, a power ballad with an amazing guitar solo. It is a slithery, limbre, wild ride but subdued ride of a song leading to the path taken.
The seriousness here is very sexy, the words to the wise, somberly but excitingly righteous and the track is just waiting for some TV drama to pick up on it because it will add depth to anything at all anywhere at all. It’s like a one way ticket to seriouslyness!
An absolute gem of a song. We’ve got Friends back.
