Frank Iero "Weighted" Track Review

Frank Iero, former member of My Chemical Romance, released a new song called “Weighted”.  frnkiero andthe cellabration, the new project he’s a part of, isn’t half bad.  The tune was described by internet sensation, SNCKPCK, as “sounds like elvis depressedly + alex g + wavves”, which made me automatically intrigued.

The tune is off their upcoming album, “stomachaches”, due out at the end of August, and I have to say that this track has made me really excited for it.  It starts out with hazy far away vocals (I sense the elvis depressedly bit here).  It adds on some pretty odd and complex instruments (alex g), and the chorus really pumps it up and makes the song pretty dancey (wavves).

It’s fun and feels indie, genuinely underground and DIY.  I never expected Iero to go in that direction considering he could create some seriously well-produced crisp clean generic music if he wanted to.  However, he’s chosen to sound raw and it was one of the best decisions he’s ever made.  I absolutely love how it sounds, like it could be by a local band and I’ve heard this a thousand times in my friends’ basements.  Iero could start playing house shows with this kinda sound.

Iero explains his project, saying “In late 2012 I started to experience an increase in my already painful digestive issues and my creative side started to wither under the weight of not ever feeling well.”  From there, he said. “I turned my basement office into a makeshift studio and every time I felt the pain coming on I’d go downstairs and hammer out an idea.”

The man’s definitely impressed me, and I was definitely skeptical when I heard about it.  But damn, Iero’s headed in the right direction.
