Fidlar at the El Rey Theater on Tuesday July 26th, 2011

I saw Fidlar at the Echo about three weeks ago, and BAM! Suddenly they are opening for Trash-Talk and Fucked Up at the El Rey! There are tons of bands in Los Angeles, and I can’t have heard of all of them, but Fidlar seems to have surfaced so fast, it is impressive. They really deserve it with their surf-skate-punk-rock, they were like a fresh air before the mayhem produced by the two other bands. Not that they didn’t start a mosh pit, because they did!

They played loud and fast, without taking themselves seriously a minute, with that laid-back attitude that made me like them at the first sight.  It was funny as they could totally sound crisp and contemporary and at the same time evoking a mix of early punk and rock’ n’ roll. There was not one of their short surfing songs that didn’t sound upbeat and didn’t make the effect of a joyous rush of adrenaline.

‘You guys are really good’ yelled someone, as there also was some talk about only three K7 left for sale and Zac, one of the singer, having only $7 left on his bank account.
I smelt weed in the air at the same time and I wondered how people could smoke while moshing.

After watching their performance at the Echo early July, I downloaded their DIYDUI EP, but from the set they played on Tuesday, I can tell they have much more in store that these 5 songs. Their boosts of beer-fueled energy, harmonized-screamed power choruses, and aggressive-catchy melodies were hitting the crowd fast, a perfect preparation for what was left to come that night.
