I don’t know if we needed another cover of the classic ‘Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood’, but since this is a remake by Eric Burdon of The Animals, we gladly take it! This time, Burdon is joined by ex-Rilo Kiley girl Jenny Lewis to revamp the 1965 hit, and it totally works. Despite the fact that Burdon just celebrated his 72 birthday this past Saturday, his voice sound youthful, while Lewis’ emotional vocals nicely complement it, with a touch a sexy-scary ambiance in the background.
The duet follows a series of new school-old school associations, specially concocted by KCRW DJ Gary Calamar for the HBO vampire series ‘True Blood’. Remember, we previously got a Iggy Pop-Best Coast’s collaboration for ‘Let’s Boot and Rally’, a Nick Cave-Neko Case’s one for The Zombies’ ‘She’s Not There’, and I must have missed the Donovan-Karen Elson’s one for ‘Season of the Witch’!
On his blog, Calamar explains that because of Eric Burdon’s recent career resurgence with a new album ‘Till Your River Runs Dry’ and because of his love for Jenny Lewis’ voice and style, he got the idea to make them record together one of his favorite songs ‘Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood’, already chosen by the writers of the show.
So listen to this vampirized new version, which will appear on the compilation ‘True Blood Vol. 4’, released on May 28th via ATO Records, along with recordings by My Morning Jacket, Alabama Shakes, Los Lobos, Deap Vally, The Flaming Lips, The Naked and Famous, Warpaint, and Howlin’ Wolf.
