Don’t Miss: City Parks Foundation’s Summer Preview Tomorrow, January 8th, 2015

Summer Breeze for One Night Only
Summer Breeze for One Night Only

The great thing about the SummerStage teaser in the wilds of winter in nyc is not just, or even necessarily, the performers at the City Parks Foundations annual early showcase, but the promise of a summer yet to come, as the really cold, dreary weather settles into your bones, suddenly you are thinking of Saturday afternoons in Central Park where the day and the music can take up all your time and then the next day? More. And the following week? Even more.

For the Showcase, the name you’ve probably noticed is Hollie Cook -Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook’s daughter, and a former member of the Slits, with a taste for reggae and dub (but no dubstep) and the other name you’ll notice is another scion of pop music royalty, Bobby McFerrin’s son Taylor McFerrin.

You can catch em both plus the Barr Brothers at Highline Ballroom tomorrow at 8pm. Checkout the press release here:

November 21, 2014 – City Parks Foundation is pleased to announce the SummerStage Showcase, a special event taking place at the Highline Ballroom on Thursday, January 8, 2015. In partnership with the Santa Monica Pier Twilight Concert Series, the SummerStage Showcase will feature British “Tropical Pop” singer Hollie Cook, Canadian folk group The Barr Brothers, and DJ and instrumentalist Taylor McFerrin, for a night of performances that will offer audiences a preview of the upcoming 30th Anniversary season of SummerStage. Hollie Cook, daughter of Sex Pistols’ Paul Cook, was born and bred in West London in a household dominated by music. In 2006, at the invitation of original Slits singer and family friend, Ari Up, Hollie joined the re-formed Slits, performing on their EP  Revenge of the Killer Slits and their subsequent album,  Trapped Animal, as well as touring with the group. She went on to collaborate with Stone Roses singer Ian Brown and musician Jamie T, before beginning work with producer Mike ‘Prince Fatty’ Pelanconi on her 2011 self-titled debut album. Her sound is self-described “tropical pop” – a combination of reggae and classic 60s girl group influences. Hollie’s second solo album,  TWICE, was released worldwide on May 12, 2014 on Mr. Bongo Records.Website: http://holliecook.com/ The Barr Brothers are a Montreal based folk-roots quartet featuring brothers Brad and Andrew Barr with harpist Sarah Pagé and multi-instrumentalist Andrés Vial. The group’s first self-titled LP was released in 2011 and their second album, Sleeping Operator, debuted in October 2014. They’ve opened for folk singer Emmylou Harris and were nominated for a 2013 Juno award for Adult Alternative Album of the Year.Website: http://thebarrbrothers.com/ Brooklyn-based producer, composer, pianist, DJ and live musician Taylor McFerrin released his first full length LP,  Early Riser, in June 2014 on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder record label. Taylor’s musical style is equally influenced by the legends of 60s/70s Soul, the kings of the Modern Beat Generation, Golden Era hip hop, free form jazz and electronic music. By playing all of the instruments on his productions, while also relying heavily on sampling and chopping up his live takes, he has found a sound that seamlessly bridges myriad musical worlds and draws the listener into a constantly shifting audio soundscape.
