You usually see these accessories in the mouth of rappers, they are like jewelry for mouths and teeth, but recently it has become a girl thing and Madonna, Rita Ora, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Rihanna have been seen wearing some. Not that I find these ‘grillz’ pretty, but I suppose you are making a sort of statement when you are wearing these?
It turns out that these metal mouth accessories are made by a French designer Dolly Cohen, an ex dental technician who knew out to turn her ordinary job in a more artistic and probably more lucrative occupation. Check out her Instagram page, and you will see hundreds of her models, the next one more disturbing than the other…They all give you a sort of Hannibal Lecter look and I wonder whether some are painful to wear? How do you eat with these things? May be it is a good way to stay thin.
She now has a Tumblr page with heavy traffic, and was discovered by A$AP, her first famous customer. Then Rihanna saw his mouthpiece, and from there, Dolly became the grill-maker for celebrities. All of her creations are customized and handmade, and are unique pieces, she said to Vogue magazine she will never make the same one again. Using her dentistry practice, she makes a mold of someone’s mouth and then sculpts the piece using chromium chromate, then 18K gold, yellow or white.
She made an AK-47 piece for Rihanna and each grill has a unique price from 200 euros or more, which has to be a very reasonable price considering her clientele. Drake is coming very soon and I bet her prices are gonna increase soon, now that she is becoming famous. She operates without a store, or even a webstore, but she has attracted the most famous customers you can imagine. She said in an interview with Vogue that her dream client is Kanye West, ‘I want to change his permanent grill,’ he said to Vogue…may be not her most original idea!
