Conor Oberst Live At Gigstock Reviewed

Oberst
Oberst

Conor Oberst performed some of his new songs live and when I heard the news I nearly fell out of my chair.  They’re recorded, on the internet, and it was just recorded on the 10th.  I was nervous and excited to listen to it, because usually live videos of Oberst either aren’t that great or he’s not at the top of his game.

That wasn’t the case for this live session.  “Time Forgot” is a beautiful song, catchy with a really upbeat sound.  He also looks good, clean and healthy and his skin is clear.  It’s nice to see him doing well.  The song itself is simple and lovely, “everyone has a choice to make, to be in love or to be free,” summing up a lot of the emotions in it.  “What I meant is I’m not all there until I finally leave.  Some loneliness is acceptable and some is outright mean,” another line that hits particularly hard.  His voice is better than ever, clear and crisp.  I was really blown away.
“Double Life” has the natural sad feel that any Oberst songs pierces into your gut with.  It’s gorgeous and heartfelt, a slow ballad that’s heartbreaking and proves that the man still knows exactly how to play a song so that it tugs at your heartstrings.  His guitar skills are phenomenal, and he seems to be more charismatic in his performance than usual.  Though he’s no real frontman or crazy performer, it shows that he feels comfortable and content, and that makes this video nearly more powerful than the song itself.  Put together, it’s almost overwhelming.
The last song, “Common Knowledge”, is my favorite.  It has that powerful imagery in the lyrics that I find myself craving from other musicians when Oberst is really the only one who can do it right.  “..Holds onto his mind just like a kite but a good strong wind will keep you honest, fill you with some common knowledge, things when you were young you never tried, I figured we had time for such a long life.”  This tune feels like it could be on “I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning” but it’s so much better, the man has improved exponentially, and I had no idea that was possible.  I’m so incredibly impressed.
This live session will break your heart.
