Cock rock is a term, typically used derogatorily, to describe a style of rock music that emphasized an aggressive form of male sexuality. It developed in the later 1960s and came to prominence in the 1970s and 1980s.- wikipedia
So that's what Cock Rock is, 'Aggressive form of male sexuality". See this is where it can branch out in to all types of interpretation. Is cock rock the macho man of say, Springsteen? Well, no not blue collar it says derogatorily, Would cock rock be gg Alin? I mean really there is nothing more derogatory in rock and roll than him and as for aggressive form of male sexuality I do believe he would win hands down.
The phrase becomes more confusing still according to Wikipedia:
Cock rock was first mentioned by an anonymous author in the New York-based, underground feminist publication Rat in 1970, to describe the male dominated music industry and became a synonym for hard rock, emphasizing the aggressive expression of male sexuality, often misogynist lyrics and use of phallic imagery.
This I believe was a way to segregate 'hard rock' from 'pop' perhaps. Who knows? By the 80's cock rock was actually hair metal bands like Poison and Motley Crue, basically spandex boys with big hair and big numbers of groupies. It has pretty much remained in the metal genre, tough guys with tattoos and such bands with 'balls' I suppose.
Cock rock is a good thing. Rock and Roll, like football is a mans sport. Oh sure women can try but always fall just a step behind in the game (as they should) Lita, Joan, Chrissie all good in their own right, all worth something. Not one of them has a cock (attached anyway) and not one of them will be an Ozzy or a Plant or a Tyler….there is no clit rock.
Or is there?
Bands like the Go Go's and The Bangles they bubble gummed it up, with enough gallons of Love's Baby Soft perfume to make the amphitheaters reek- where'd they go? Where is their legend? They stayed true to their girly persona, and now? Now they're nothing. Girls in bands? Well they can make it just so far before the Cock Club steps in.
Janis Joplin? Grace Slick? Meh, they earned their keep, they certainly impacted rock and roll and they also both made sandwiches for the men. They both got up did there bit and stepped away. I'm not saying they weren't talented or history making, I'm simply saying that aside from the fact that you can count female icons of rock on your two hands (or one), and even those will not have the name recognition of their testosterone pumping counterparts.
Rock and Roll, before it was airbrushed and fluffed was rebel music. It was 'sticking it to the man' as Jack Black said in film School of Rock, Women, even in 2011 cannot 'stick it the the man', we still earn less, we still primarily run the home and last I checked aside from that freak in the National Inquirer are still the ones popping out the population.
Men are cutting things up and thrashing things around. They're causing havoc they're fighting wars (take a second- how many female casualties have their bee in our overseas tea parties these past 10 years?) and they're getting dirty.
Women no matter what they may say or bitch about loudly over Cosmo's like that. Girls like boys who kick ass. Girls like boys who are noisy and messy and dangerous and yes even violent to an extent. There is not a woman on Earth who hasn't swooned when a man steps in to defend her. Hell it happens right here when I get pounded by readers-Iman steps in (see Epitaph Records post fyi…) and swoon hes a hero. He also has the hardware to be a man and behaves as such.
Ok so back to rock and roll. Cock rock is true rock- its in your face 'fuck you' music that like a tribal drum pumps you full of fight or flight and readys you like an animal to take it all on. Its the steering wheel pound as you go 100mph listening to "Radar Love" its the fist pump of 'We Will Rock You" its the mosh pit blood bath of "Lets Have a War" Go ahead and Google "Cock Rock", youll get Rhiana, and Gaga and Beiber, all women who wish they had one. Simple- they dont.
So in 1970 hard rock was tough. I say in 2011 we make it tougher.
Don't kid yourself, no girl not even post surgical can ever take a mans place in a rock band. You have to be brave to try that's for sure, but your still just a pair of pumps and an apron away from meatloaf and PTA.
