This could explain a lot, E! News has the answer about the Chris Brown phenomenon. According to some legal documents the entertainment channel has obtained, the always-belligerent hip hop artist may suffer from bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. They have actually obtained a letter from a rehab facility, which details the diagnosis:
‘Mr. Brown will also require close supervision by his treating physician in order to ensure his bipolar mental health condition remains stable. It is not uncommon for patients with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Bipolar II to use substances to self-medicate their biomedical mood swings and trauma triggers.’
‘Mr. Brown became aggressive and acted out physically due to his untreated mental health disorder, severe sleep deprivation, inappropriate self-medicating and untreated PTSD.’
This guy has all the money in the world and he was not seeing a doctor to get proper medication or is it just a bad excuse for all the drugs he took? According to Rolling Stone, Brown has completed 250 hours of community service and has still 750 left to go, but he is a changed man who ‘wants to continue completing his community labor hours and looks forward to staying out of trouble.’
He will be back to rehab for two more months, in the rehabilitation center in Malibu where apparently he has been a model patient, but we have to keep in mind that he threw a rock through his mother’s car window just last November, and that, as soon as he gets out of rehab, he will resume his trial for assaulting an art student back in October. He is not out of trouble yet.
I don’t know if the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder part is a reference to the domestic abuse he witnessed when he was young, but it is a strong possibility. His stepfather used to beat up his mother as he revealed in a 2007 interview with Giant magazine: ‘He used to hit my mom. He made me terrified all the time, terrified like I had to pee on myself. I remember one night he made her nose bleed. I was crying and thinking, ‘I’m just gonna go crazy on him one day.’ … I hate him to this day’… ‘I’m gonna take a baseball bat one day while you at work, and I’m gonna kill him.’
All this violent behavior in his current life could be the result of this past violence, but even knowing this, it’s very hard to get any sympathy for the guy, he simply got involved into too much trouble at the top of Rihanna’s horrific beating. I read many comments on diverse websites, and 90% of them condemn him and accuse him to be a monster and a terrible human being. We are always a result of our genes and environment and modern science agrees on the fact that the traditional ideas of free will and taking responsibility of our actions are complete illusions. What we take for free will is just the result of our previous experiences, brain chemistry, and unconscious thoughts. It’s a controversial subject for most people and we are very attached to this idea of free will because it is one of the pillars of our morality. And that’s why we can’t forgive Chris Brown.
