Summer is almost over. So what a better way to step in to some Surf Music 101 than the soundtrack to one of the greatest films ever. The greatest thing about this movie is the drop in dialogs Starting off with Pumpkin and Honey Bunny, pretty much starts it with the power you need. I have quoted this line so often its insane. But its fantastic even as a standalone quote." Any of you fuckin' pricks move and I'll execute every mother fucking last one of you" and BAM straight into Misrilou" by Dick Dale and His DelTones. I double dick dare you to sit still thorough this tune. Lightening guitar and hand clapping makes it all the more cool."hu Hu HAAAAAAA". I swear this music is not only addictive but should be my morning alarm clock. How the hell do they play that fast? Add the brass and I'm in heaven. I freaking adore this tune.
This leads right to the infamous 'Royale With Cheese' dialog- well put. You should see the film if you haven't This bit is hilarious and I love that its in the soundtrack if only as a reminder of how well written the movie is
Next up? My man Reverend Al Green. "Let's Stay Together" one of the few songs that can actually make me cry. "You make me feel so brand new". What a beautiful line that is. Think about it, what's better than being new? Al Green is magic. The song is so soft and loving in a soundtrack full of raw power. Its just a peaceful loving reprieve. Its placed a bit early but perhaps in doing so it makes the unraveling all the more dramatic (have you stopped to see the movie yet?!)
The Tornado's are up next with 'Bustin Surfboards' hello wave back ground sound! Fucking awesome. A bit slower and grindier than some surf tunes. Bass heavy and sexy this is night surf music if ever. Lyrics are over rated when music is like this. Intensely awesome and twangy in the best of ways.
Someone gave Ricky Nelson a slot 'Lonesome Town" is a slowed down relic offering a bit of moody emo heart tug in the midst of a blood bath. Ricky was pretty cool- I think in his day he was sort of a nerd but all these years later he has some pretty good swag. Still not the coolest but not the worse either. A true tale of lament. Love's dead "you were my angel now you are real' is a pretty intense line. I love it. "Colder than steal" fantastic, this chick has balls.
"Son of A Preacher Man", good ol' Dusty Springfield. This song is the bouffant hairdo ode to country girl gone bad. I don't get the reason its in this film other than nostalgia. She has a beautiful voice. Vulnerable and raspy. Again the brass in this is fabulous. But this song is a story of how the son is a perv. I blame him. So she had typical good girl syndrome and he was clergy- nuff said.
"Zeds Dead Baby… Zed's Dead', I could never look at a gag ball the same again.
"Bullwinkle Part II" by The Centurions Sex in string form. The bass in this tune is so dirty I need a shower every time I hear it. A song I have on constant repeat. From its dangerous start to its stark progression, always held together with that plucking bass. The drum in this is poptastic by the way. It makes me nervous and I dig it.
"You Never Can Tell" Chuck Berry. I love this part of the movie. Vince Vega and Mia Wallace cutting it up at Jack Rabbit Slims. Actually I wish there was a Jack Rabbit Slims, Id be living there- no lie. This Berry song is a great story of young love and trouble. Again the drum and bass make it come alive. HOT DAMN this song is incredible "c'est la vie say the old folks, it goes to show you never can tell'
"Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon" Urge Overkill Take Neill Diamonds tune and grunge it up as a background to a drug overdose and you have a recipe for greatness. This version was a fabulous addition to the soundtrack- a modernized classic "God Damn. I say.. GOT DAYUM"… go see the movie will ya?
"If Love Is A Red Dress (Hang me in Rags) Maria McKee. When I bought this CD in 1994 I skipped this tune every time. Her pitch annoyed me and I hate woman songs of triumph. Now hearing it I realize its a masterpiece. How fabulous she holds those notes and how high they are! The lyrics are awesome as well. "
Bring Out The Gimp.. oh shit..yeah
"Comanche" The Revels This song is so filthy I have to take a shower when I hear it. The deep bass is sex in strings. I can clean my entire dangerous night music thats a tad too fast to be obscene, but none the less. Dirty.
"Flowers On The Wall" The Statler Brothers Hated this originally too. Its actually cool 'with a deck of 51' is a pretty bad ass statement. "smoking cigarettes and and watching Captain Kangaroo, don't tell me I ain't got nothing to do" HA! swag.
-Bacon tastes gooood. Pork chops taste gooood.
– Hey, sewer rat may taste like pumpkin pie, but I'd never know 'cause I wouldn't eat the filthy motherfucker. Pigs sleep and root in shit. That's a filthy animal. I ain't eat nothin' that ain't got sense enough to disregard its own feces.
Surf Rider The Lively Ones A perfect exit tune. I should have this played at my funeral. It sounds desolate and lonely. Surf music is pretty emotional be it full of pep and sunshine or lone cruising darkeners it pulls and emotion. Its no wonder this soundtrack is so outstanding. And the film was as well- have you watched it YET?!?
"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee."
