What the hell is Boston doing? Remember Boston? They were a staple of 80’s teenage nightmares. “More Than a Feelling” was an anthemic backdrop to the idiot stoners in my high school.
Boston hasn’t done anything but exist on the fringe since then, as far as I am concerned. Of course, there are those die hard mullet wearing nobs who will shout that this band rules but they are the same truck driving red necks who do the oil changes at Jiffy Lube.
This holiday offering is not terrible. Not at all! Its actually quite good! The only thing that is idiotic is the title since this couldn’t be further from metal if it tried. But it is ‘hard rock’ I suppose. Aside from the generic lyric sing at opening it goes instrumental and becomes more Trans Siberian Orchestra than Boston anyway. Since it will only be played a month a year forever its actually welcome, since I would rather here this than Mariah Carey yelping out another classic.
Holiday songs are a dime a dozen. Classics are redone so many times that people actually forget what the original sounded like. That’s all part of the natural cycle of things. This all being said there is something else you should be aware of. Once you sample this Metal Gentleman silliness don’t click out of the site. Frontiers Records serves up another song by Boston, and its a classic that suddenly is very good. Not good enough for me to put a Chevy on blocks on my front lawn nor to grow a mullet and wear Cold Water Creak but enough for me to think they really aren’t as horrible as I thought they were. Hey Boston, cool tune. Check out “Let Me Take You Home Tonight”(again!). no really, it’s worth it.
