Vampire Weekend have announced a release date for their upcoming and third album: mark your calendar, it’s gonna be May 6/7th. The band effectively updated their website for the occasion with the giant letters 'LP3 Complete', printed over the oil painting of ‘Washington crossing the Delaware’,… could it be the cover of the new album? In this case, what kind of message are they sending, that it’s gonna be a classic? We’ll see… The band was the subject of a hoax earlier this month, as a fake cover showing a girl’s body in a mousseline yellow dress with the title ‘Lemon Sounds’ was presented as the cover of LP3, but it's certainly not what you can expect for the May release.
But a new song of them, interpreted live at Sydney’s Metro Theater, was posted on a fan site, Team Vampire Weekend tumblr. This makes the second one we hear from the still untitled LP3. After 'Unbelievers’, they already performed on late night TV, here is ‘Arms’, a gentle ballad with a lot of bouncing drumming and Ezra Koenig’ high-pitched gentle croon floating over a cute melody of glittering synth and even unexpected soaring strings towards the end.
He, and the whole song, sound more than ever, like … Paul Simon’s Graceland. Sorry for the obvious comparison, everybody must have repeated it, and the band must be super-tired of it, but the relatively low quality of the recording is reinforcing the resemblance, Actually, it sounds a little bit like a tamed and slow-down version of 'You can Call me Al', you know, like the intro without the big sax part! Just listen to it below!
