With U2’s first top 30 single since, ahem, 1991, with “Every breaking Wave” –surely one of the seven signs the world has come to an end, rock nyc is taking a moratorium on being mean to Bono till his hand is fully (or as fully as it is gonna be) healed.
We did this once before, when Bono injured his back –when this guy gets hurt he gets really hurt, and we wrote only nice U2 stories til he got better and so it will be now. We here at rock nyc don’t have the heart to kick anybody when they’re down and there is something a little sad about U2 right now. Bono can’t seem to get it right but obviously, he will make something like 100M over the next year so it is hard to feel THAT SORRY for him.
Money, success, has a price among the cool, and the price is contempt.
But when an injury happens, we put away the price –it is as though he has paid the price for our feelings via being hurt, the hurt removes the contempt for however long the hurt continues (I think death does the same thing as well, in death we ignore our contempt for a while… it’s like a get out of jail free) and then once he gets better, we can go back to sneering at his contemptible success.
