Bono, The Edge… And Their Bodyguards

Remember that post I wrote the other day about Bono singing "Psycho Killer" at a Sao Paolo Karoake club for the rich and famous?

Well, Page Six added  that 80 bodyguards secured the area outside so Bono, the Edge, a coupla soccer players and a Muse or two wouldn't be bothered by riff raff like me and you. That is EIGHTY BODYGUARDS!!

Joseph McElroy suggested since Bono wanted to save the world, perhaps he could add to number and invade Libya! How can we do ANYTHING but sneer at this guy?  he has a bigger detail than the President.

Look, in the wake of John Lennon nobody doubts for a second Bono needs a bodyguard or even 5, one for each aspect of his ego. BUT this is ridiculous. This is yet another episode of dum in the world of rock stardom.

It is as if all the crap punk washed away came back twice as strong. Rock stars are the super-syphllis of music, nothing can get rid of it and allt hey can do, the bonos and Madonnas, the Gagas and Eltons, is wash ashore on a sea of bloated ego, crap music and saturated self-indulgence.

Remember when rock was meant to be about the lives we lived? Remember how the Sun recordings were truck drivers and jailbirds, leaving the nightshift for two hours, to get real gone, and to play what the people who were listening to them was?

IT DOESN'T FUCKING EXIST.

As social, generational, political savior rock and roll is dead.

Musically, historically and culturally it is fine.

So it sounds great but it can't exist outside its own limitations. It doesn't have a life bigger than itself.

Punk had a social contract with its fans: we are you.

That contract is dead.

The likes of Bono killed it. Springsteen taking farm subsidies, Bono with his 80 guards, Jay-Z hanging with president -nothing to see here folks, move along.
