Bob Dylan's "The Complete Basement Tapes" Reviewed CD 5

Blues style

Blues style

1. Blowin’ in the Wind – 1967 and Dylan was already rearranging the classics, here he turns the civil rights masterpiece into the blues – B

2. One Too Many Mornings – Richard Manuel takes the lead, adding credence to the “Dylan did the sessions to help manuel out of a manic depression that would eventually cause him to commit suicide” – B+

3. A Satisfied Mind (written by Joe Hayes and Jack Rhodes) – Not bad, but Dylan’s version on Saved is better – B+

4. It Ain’t Me, Babe – Country take, would fit on Nashville Skyline. Much better on Before The Flood – B+

5. Ain’t No More Cane (Take 1) (Traditional, arranged by Bob Dylan) – slower, solo – B+

6. Ain’t No More Cane (Take 2) (Traditional, arranged by Bob Dylan) – Closer To 75 -but not there yet – A-

7. My Woman She’s A-Leavin’ – Blues, but a betetr than we’ve become used to song – A

8. Santa-Fe – One of my faves from the first Bootleg tapes – A

9. Mary Lou, I Love You Too – Fabulous calypso track. A pure pleasure – A

10. Dress it up, Better Have it All – Holy crap, this is a glorious 50s style rocker, this is where the CD comes into its own – A

11. Minstrel Boy – “Although the version here was released on last year’s Another Self Portrait, the charm of this song fragment and Levon Helm’s return to the vocal mix made it impossible not to include.” why did I include this quote? Because it is the first time I’ve written from home and had access to crib notes so I though I’d use em – B

12. Silent Weekend – More blues – B+

13. What’s it Gonna be When it Comes Up – Another blues work out –  B+

14. 900 Miles from My Home (Traditional, arranged by Bob Dylan) – Fantastic take on the traditional. Superb song – A

15. Wildwood Flower (written by A.P. Carter) – Hillbilly classic – A-

16. One Kind Favor (Traditional, arranged by Bob Dylan) – Blues classic taken slow and deep – A-

17. She’ll be Coming Round the Mountain (Traditional, arranged by Bob Dylan) – You think of this as a nursery rhyme but this is a dead on Okies take – A

18. It’s the Flight of the Bumblebee – The intro is great – B+

19. Wild Wolf – Back to the liner notes: “Wild Wolf” joins the ranks of “Sign on the Cross” and “I’m Not There” as one of those basement tape recordings that hints at a much deeper and profound composition” – Hmm, I like it boats load more than that. This is a major song – A

20. Goin’ to Acapulco – Love this song, love this take – A

21. Gonna Get You Now – Dylan retells the Little Red Riding Hood story – A-

22. If I Were A Carpenter (written by James Timothy Hardin)- Very felt with lotsa blues licks – B+

23. Confidential (written by Dorina Morgan) – Doo wop hit from 1956 – B

24. All You Have to do is Dream (Take 1) – Excellent original, a beauty – A-

25. All You Have to do is Dream (Take 2) – Better faster – A

Comment: First, liner notes by  Ben Rollins (here) helped but I tried not to steal too much. next, the heart of the matter are blues vamps after blues vamps. Writer Rob O’Connor claims it is his favorite, for me? A masterpiece no doubt, but I’m not a big blues guy…
