Black Churches
Black Churches

House shows are definitely the greatest thing in CT’s music scene, and luckily there’s a home right close by that is the residence of members of  Two Humans.  They held a show- The Guru, Black Churches, High Pop, Two Humans, and Setsuna.  It was packed as hell- easily 100 people were squished into this little suburban home- and loud and the house felt like it had a pulse.  Luckily, the cops didn’t come and we enjoyed our night of blaring music and dancing with reckless abandon in peace.

A band that really blew me away was Black Churches.  I had never seen them before, but had heard good things and downloaded some of their music the previous week to prepare.  They’re pretty heavy, and have a really impressive sound.  I love the incorporation of piano into their music- it’s hard for groups like them to have keys without it sounding cliche or too much like a really crappy Chiodos coverband.  It works really well, though, and I was captivated by their stage presence.
The trio has a ridiculous amount of power.  A lot of their music has a really old school punk rock feel, and I saw that in the crowd, too.  It looked a lot like those videos you watch of local punk bands playing in minuscule venues “back in the day”.  The driving beat of the drum was constant and a fantastic backbone to the cacophony of noise that was dancing on top it, the perfect vocals and instrumentals all blending together to form an addictive, catchy, rough sound that really solidified my love for Black Churches.  They reminded me a little bit of 2*Sweet, a band that pretty much fell off the face of the earth, but it was a really great memory and now I can’t stop listening to them.
Hop on the bandwagon.
