Best Coast have released a new album, but honestly, reading from different articles online, I don’t know what matters the most: their Jon-Brion-produced new ‘The Only Place’ or Bethany Cosentino’s new Urban Outfitters’ clothing line launched at the same time.
The Best Coast girl effectively designed lots of clothes for the famous store chain, and if you go to the Urban Outfitters website, you will see her summery collection of mini skirts and shorts, skinny Capris, see-through tops, cute dresses that she said were inspired by the movie Clueless. There are even a Cher dress and a Stevie Cape (she idolizes Fleetwood Mac), and all this looks young and cute, no doubt…. But isn’t she going to get some bad rap for doing this? Is she selling out, cashing in? However, she is not afraid of the critics as she declared to the LAWeekly: ‘Best Coast is a brand, I’m a businesswoman’.
She has the merit to be direct and clear, she is not trying to hide anything, and I would not hold her any grudge for this, since who doesn’t do it these days?
However the LAWeekly is discreetly pointing to something more troublesome: Urban Outfitters CEO, Richard Hayne is quite the conservative type: he donated generous amounts of money to (then senator) Rick Santorum in 2006, the company retracted a shirt advocating support for same-sex marriage in 2008 when California was voting for proposition 8… There is even a Change.org petition against Hayne’s support for anti-LGBT rights! Interestingly, Hayne has not contributed to Santorum's campaign for presidency, may be because his first contribution was posted all over facebook? Funny who can really hide behind a shop designed to attract hipsters with cool fake-edgy clothes.
But Cosentino plays it relaxed with the whole thing, saying: ‘People need to chill out about Urban, I would be surprised if a lot of those people don't own something [from it].’
Well I disagree, why is she dealing with people like this? She can play all the Planned Parenthood benefit concerts she wants, make us believe she has this cool hippie life with her weed-smoking boyfriend, she should pick her business partners better!
