Beatles Album Fails At Auction

How can this be?  You cannot put a price tag on the Fab Four?  Their nose hair at auction would be millions and didn't some freak auction Lennon's tooth?  Yet the infamous gold pressing just didn't hit the asking cost. Really?

The gold press of 1963's "Please Please Me" was estimated at about 18,000 euro but it missed its mark and was pulled from auction at 12,000 (appx $18,000).  The records owner Chris Collins calls the disc a 'burden' that has been in his sock drawer.

He said: "Late one evening while my father was drinking and playing cards with Freddie and the Dreamers, the Beatles returned to the hotel after attending some promotional events."All of the Beatles joined the card game and the record was placed in the middle of the table, where it was used as a coaster for whisky glasses."

Wait, Freddy and The Dreamers?  Who drinks and hangs out withe Freddie and The Dreamers?   Theres more to the back story here, and chances are we will never know it.

I suppose there is some damage to the sleeve (though it is autographed) since it was used as a coaster but regardless, no one was willing to toss in that extra cash?  Considering Beatlemania I'm really very surprised.

Mr Collins added: "I used to play it until about 10 years ago. Then when I found out it might be worth quite a lot, it became quite a burden.

"It had been sitting in a drawer with my socks, but once we were told about the value, I wouldn't play it any more and didn't know where to keep it.

"Now it may have to go back in the sock drawer."

A spokeswoman for Campbells said: "It is a real shame because it had attracted a lot of interest. But that is the nature of auctions. You never know."
