I wrote this about the J Geils band two years ago when they opened for Bon Jovi: “Jon isn’t as good a frontman as he appears to believe himself to be. OK with an Arena, he gets dwarf at a stadium and couldn’t work Metlife Thursday night. If he had taken a peak at his opening act, J.Geils Band, he would have seen Peter Wolfe teach a lesson on how to play to someone elses audience. A smart mix of deep tracks, hits, and covers, Peter never stopped moving and dressed in level and looking like a rock and roll Scarecrow, he cajoled the audience for an overlong hour set and won on points. It was a bravado performance and makes you wonder what might have been if J. Geils could have maintained their “Love Stinks”, their penultimate number Thursday night.”
To put that another way, J Geils Band are one of the great still standing live bands around and any chance to see them is a chance worth taking. Playing the theatre size Beacon, er, Theatre, you can get pretty close here and that’s for sure, and in a rare, really rare, first in 30 years rare headlining gig in New York City and if I didn’t already have plans to go to see AC/DC I would be soooo there.

The J. Geils Band brings its Houseparty Tour 2015 to The Beacon Theatre this summer for their first headlining NYC show in 30 years! The J. Geils Band dominated the radio airwaves with a series of several hit singles in the 1970s including “Looking for A Love” “Give It To Me” and “Must of Got Lost.” In the early 1980s the group tempered its driving rock with some pop, that included the humorous hit “Love Stinks” and saw massive commercial success with the Freeze Frame album and its blockbuster “Centerfold,” which stayed at number one for six weeks.
