Album covers used to be true art. With the popularity of digital download there is less appreciation for the sleeve- cuz there isn’t one. The days of laying on the floor and reading every word on an album are done. Cassettes made them smaller, CD’s were a bit better but now? It’s a dying art.
One of the most famous works that has recently experienced a renaissance is the “Unknown Pleasures” art from Joy Division. Even Walt Disney World took a stab at that in its gift shops. The blips are everywhere now and the album came out in 1979, that’s pretty impressive.
So who created it? Artist Peter Saville is now talking about his work and in an upcoming conference will go into even more detail The New York ‘Visualized’ conference takes place November 8 and 9 in NYC. The promoters of the event have put together a little video where the artists discusses his inspiration, creation and cultural impact of the image.
For the record Saville worked on many album sleeves, including Joy Division's second and final album Closer, New Order's Power, Corruption And Lies, Peter Gabriel's So, Wham!'s Music From The Edge Of Heaven and Pulp's This Is Hardcore.
Check out the video below for some interesting info on the cover that graces your t-shirt.
