Anthony Raneri's "String Me Along" Reviewed

Anthony Raneri With Some Cats

Anthony Raneri released a new solo song called “String Me Along” and it’s absolutely stunning. The upbeat piano and pleasant beat is met with his gorgeous voice; the harmonies are chilling and there’s nothing about this song that isn’t perfect.

It feels light and peppy, but of course it has a bit of a reflective side that addresses negatives, but refuses to dell.  “As I’ve gotten older and older, I’ve picked up some things- a brave, calloused soldier.  There’s steel now where once there was skin.”

“String me along the neighborhood, ‘cos that makes you feel so good” is a poignant line that just solidifies the fact that Raneri is a genius song writer.  Being able to change a “you’re pathetic and sucky” line into “I don’t mind, but I still think you’re secretly pathetic.”  His voice here is wholesome and strong; it’s incredible the depth that he possesses.  It’s one of the things that makes his voice so distinct and unique, and it fits this song seamlessly.

“I’ll never ask questions, no matter what you put me through ‘cos I’ve always been lonely- at least now I’m lonely with you.”  This then bursts into the energetic chorus, filled with the magical vocals, fun backbeat, and harmonies and whistling.  It’s composed so well, down to the very last note being a cymbal hit on the drums.  It’s so well thought-out and meticulous in a way that only Raneri can do.

This song is a part of an EP being released called “Our Voices” on I Surrender Records.  The goal is to make this the first of a series of songs done solo by big artists in the indie/rock genre.  This wonderful idea starts out with Raneri of Bayside, Lazzara of Taking Back Sunday, and many more.  It’ll be out on November 25th, and you can preorder it here.
