Who Is The Best New York Band In 2013? I Have No Idea…

When I first moved to the States in 1979, New York was the center of the music world. Rap Uptown, Punk downtown and New Wave in the middle and even later, even in the 80s No New York happened, scene followed scene but everything dies, baby and in 2013 the diffused possibility that was rock and roll has infected nyc.

I've been covering nyc since 2009 on this website and if there is a center, if there is a New York music movement, I don't hear it. I mean, honestly, is their a TYPE OF BAND that plays Glasslands? Are there like minded friends and families and musicians going to Fontana's the way there once was at Max's and Hurrah?  Piano or Bowery Electric? Santos? A city which is all center has no musical fulcrum. Nothing is really happening. It is every man for himself and God Against All.

So I am  in search of a band to represent nyc and I don't see who it could possibly be. fun. were just very successful at the Grammy's but it had nothing to do with us.

1. Glee made em big

and

2. They represent nobody but themself.

So not fun.

How about Shinobi Ninja. Despite mist of em being from Detroit they are a real New York phenomena. they are exciting, they have attitude, they record around the corner from me in Hell's Kitchen. But they aren't leaders and they need to be more popular, they need to hit the charts a coupla times.

So then who? Titus Andronicus? New Jersey. Pissed Jeans? Philadelphia. How did New York become a music center without a center? All those cool bands, the Shellshacks of the world, are all from New Brunswick.

ANybody have a suggestion as to, if it isn't SN, who is the greatest nyc band?
