Not With The Band: Why Celebrities Should Not Tell Us What To Do

Celebrities have a lot of power and they are well aware of it, even people related to celebrities realize it… and it’s dangerous because they can influence so many people into their way of thinking, their philosophy and opinions. Most people need to be told whom to admire, what to choose for breakfast and what decision to make in their daily life, it’s a sad reality but it’s true! Many people only have vague opinions but as soon as Beyonce or Lady Gaga says something they follow like a herd of sheep, that’s why cults are always a success.

And this leads us to the last example of this aberration: Pattie Mallette, Justin Bieber’s mother, is producing and promoting screenings of a short movie as a fundraising opportunity for pregnancy centers. According to her own words, she is hoping that ‘Crescendo’ will ‘encourage young women all over the world, just like me, to let them know that there is a place to go, people who will take care of you and a safe home to live in if you are pregnant and think you have nowhere else to turn.’

In other words, if you are a pregnant teen, don’t get an abortion, look at me, I am the living example that the embryo in gestation in your uterus could be a gold mine. She didn’t say this of course, but she was pregnant at 17, gave birth to Justin despite been pressured into having a abortion and has been a pro-life activist since.

I haven’t seen the movie but according to some websites it is about a 18th century woman who will make a decision that will change world history… Seriously, the trailer looks very good with Beethoven’s nineth symphony for soundtrack… it doesn’t say in the trailer, but of course, you’ve guessed it, this woman is no less than Beethoven’s mother… Mallette can probably totally relate since Bieber’s birth probably equals Beethoven’s in today's musical world.

And this is the problem with these celebrities, success has turned their head, and they think they have the right to promote their values because they have the money to do so. Can't she understand that not every fetus turns into Beethoven or Einstein? Jeffrey Dahmer was a fetus too! Many people may also add she made the wrong choice, but seriously, every woman in the world should have the choice and the right to decide for herself without suffering all these celebrities endorsements.

Celebrities shouldn’t even be involved in political campaign, they have an opinion, good for them, but how does it matter for me, for us? Nobody should care about whom endorsed Obama or Romney, nobody should jump into the celebrity bandwagon endorsing this last product or this specific point of view. In the case of Bieber’s mother, it is particularly interesting because of the large public of young girls she may target with her pro-life message.

We live in a era of celebrity endorsements but the truth is that celebrities aren’t role models, they don’t know more than anybody else how to solve life’s big secrets and mysteries and at the top of this, they often preach what they don’t really apply in their life! Take this last Public Service Announcement called 'Demand a Plan', featuring 30 celebrities to urge Americans to take action and demand that elected officials come up with a strategy to curb gun violence,… soon, a critical response called ‘Demand Celebrities’ went viral on the web, and pointed out that many of these stars had the most violent gun scenes in their movies. Sure it was ironical, but the people who made the response had a point, how dare celebrities tell us what to do! And I am not even mentioning Lady Gaga’s gun-bra or Madonna’s use of fake guns on stage, while preaching peace and love!

But I digress, Bieber’s mother probably never had a secret abortion and she is probably sincere in her belief. This doesn’t make her entitled to influence millions of young girls, especially by making them feel guilty to have killed the next Mozart.
