Fiona Apple's New Song, 'Dull Tool', For Judd Apatow's Upcoming Movie 'This Is 40'

Judd Apatow has all the music world on his side, his upcoming movie, entitled ‘This is 40’ – a sort of sequel to 'Knocked Up’ – will have the best soundtrack ever, with original compositions from Norah Jones, Graham Parker, Lindsey Buckingham, Jon Brion, and songs by Paul McCartney, Yoko Ono, Ryan Adams, Paul Simon, Wilco,…!

And even Fiona Apple has written a song especially for it. ‘Dull Tool’ is a dense and fast song, with a lush orchestration and lots of deep drum beats, keeping us on suspense during a few minutes, but rather on the upbeat side with its moment of anger when Fiona sings, ‘So go tell that girl you don't love her / and if you do / tell her two times / you're more likely to get cut with a dull tool than a sharp one / you don't kiss when you kiss / you don't fuck when you fuck / you don't say what you mean / you don't talk loud enough.’ It’s intense and unpredictable, as everything she does.

The song has been submitted for an Academy Award in the best original song category, and everyone is suggesting she may win the Oscar as it is her first original composition for a movie; she recorded ‘Across the Universe’ for 'Pleasantville’ and her song ‘Paper Bag’ was used for another Apatow production ‘Bridesmaids’, but obviously, these could not be considered. The question is, will the Academy even consider a song with so many f-words?
