The last time I tried to see Sharks my evening was ruined by their tour manager. I never bothered to stay for the show knowing that just the sour taste of the over glorified roadie would force me to write horrible things about a band I actually like. It was a wise move but it also made the band fall out of my rotation. Funny isn't it how fickle we as music fans can be. You're only as good as your last hit and with so many options its tough to stay in the ear buds. We are bombarded by newer and better stuff, its dog eat dog.
I stumbled across this 'official' video for "Lucky" off of the album "No Gods". I am not sure when lead singer James Mattock left his punk gear in the closet but my oh my he has grown up and (dare I say) taken on a more mature and sensitive demeanor.
The song bathed in silly purple brings back memories of the old 80s new romantic/emo sound. Heartfelt lyrics with a poppy beat and haunting chorus. I absolutely love this song and if the video is a bit cliche' I will not hold that against them. Sharks turned in to a damn intelligent band sometime within the year cuz this is not the same band I stood in the rain to go see all that time ago.
Had this been the sound they had on The Joys of Living: 2008-2010, I may have waited out a bit longer. Of course its their original sound that caught my attention but I do believe their newer sound will catch my loyalty.
Lets face it there are a million Brit bands with deep thought and pasty skin. These aren't The Smiths or The Cure or even Bauhaus..but they certainly are evolving nicely. Check it out
