The Royalty has always wowed me and they continue to do so with their latest music video for the fantastic song “I Want You”. “I Want You” is like a beautiful cross between the sounds of The Strokes and The Naked Famous; it’s a song of upbeat melody and chilled vocals which front woman Nicole Boudreau absolutely kills. In their past music videos, the actual performance of the band has featured prominently, along with Nicole embodying the song itself in a way that most bands never do; the video for “I Want You” is no exception.
With trippy video effects, odd lights, and black and white clips of beach and dance parties popping up in the background, “I Want You” is an unyielding onslaught of musical expression. As video effects make the band look like they’re playing in an old movie, a super-imposed, tri-colored Nicole glides back and forth across the screen while playing the shy girl very well. If you just listen to the song by itself, you feel colors and static; in your head, lights pulse and static wavers. This and more is displayed in the video for “I Want You”.
One of the things I love most about The Royalty is the odd abstract quality of their music videos, and really their music itself. My inner artist is currently rolling around on the floor and dying because of how fantastic this music video is and, in my head, this may be one of the best music videos I’ve ever seen. I can’t even describe my disappointment at learning that The Royalty won’t be performing at a venue near me any time soon but West Coasters can experience The Royalty’s magic all through the fall and into winter so start getting your tickets now.
