When I read the headline I thought it was happening on stage, but in fact it is in a video, which makes it less creepy. Nevertheless it is always weird to see someone recording a new song and appearing in a new video posthumously. Amy Winehouse is indeed in Nas’ last video ‘Cherry Wine’, as a sort of hologram figure, looking like a ghost projected against a brick wall.
Nas and Winehouse had done some recording sessions together in 2008, and one of the songs ‘Like Smoke’ was featured on her posthumous album ‘Lioness: Hidden Treasures’ but the new vocals for this song were a surprise as Nas explained:
‘Yeah, Salaam [Remi who worked on ‘Back to Black’] worked on her last album, and they were working. We don’t even have an explanation for how it happened. It was just magic. It just happened. It was supposed to happen. She made it happen.’
It cracks me up when people say ‘it was supposed to happen’,… Nas made it happen, if he really felt so uncomfortable as he said he was when he was recording ‘Like Smoke’, declaring that ‘Part of me didn't want to do the song…’, why doing a second one and bring Amy’s ghost in the middle of the video? May be because the song appears on Nas’ tenth album, and it certainly will help the sales? Anyway, this is just another exploitative way to use Winehouse's dead body, and this is certainly not over,… a DVD-CD box set of live performances is coming up on November 12. Let’s hope that Nas will not bring a real Amy Winehouse's hologram on stage when he performs this song live.
