I am absolutely falling for the hype on this new 35th anniversary Sex Pistols box set. I wont even buy it but I am loving this teasers and leaks that are happening in its press blasts.
The Sex Pistols will always be the symbol of punk rock. Everyone before or after them will never live up to the image and urban legend they left in their wake. The death of Vicious only adds to the mystique making them masters of the genre with (in comparison to other acts) very little material.
Who cares?! Get a load of this beautiful bit of video! They were considered so fringe, so violent and angry. Looking at them now they can be any pop band. The audience of 'punks' not daunting at all.
This video was released by NME and apparently its a rarity from 1977 shot in Penzance Cornwall, UK
“The performance was shot using one camera and shows the extraordinary captivating quality of the band at the time,” said director Julian Temple, explaining the origins of the video. “There was shock in the room, it was hypnotizing, contagious, and unfolded right in front of you. It was filmed in Penzance in September 1977, the Pistols arrived unannounced and the audience couldn't believe what they were getting.”
How many bands just show up unannounced and play these days? You may have a walk on from a pop star but a whole band? You have to love the sheer nerve of it all.
