There has been too much love for Taylor Swift lately on Rock NYC, no kidding, I get it, she is very young and writes her own songs (with some help), she should receive credit for it because it is honest, but she probably writes a little too much about her own life, and come on, how many songs about her Hollywood ex-boyfriends do you want to listen?
Taylor Swift is currently one of the most successful songwriters, and the new song she has just released ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’ has already become a monster hit, as predicted.
Call me a snob but I simply can’t find anything valuable in this ready-for-Target-commercial girlie pop song, people say she is sincere and writes about her own experience, I say she is only bitching and venting about an ex, nothing else! Bitching and complaining that all her boyfriends suck, and her songwriting looks like an excuse to get stuff out of her chest. Honest and genuine? My ass! Aren’t all her songs about this same subject anyway?
At least she could've been a little more subtle, since there is nothing subtle about saying ‘We are never ever ever getting back together’ ten times in a 3-minute-long song. But I suppose I put the bar too high when it comes to decide what is good songwriting, is it art? Yes, I would like to think so, and Swift’s songwriting is nothing but art, it’s simply too obvious, too trite, too mystery-free! It’s lacking this necessary ingredient of mystery in art, which people tend to always forget about. Of course many songs are about love deceptions, heartbreaks and so on, but her songwriting is so direct, generic and simple, it is more cosmo magazine than art, and, with all these people trying to guess whom she is speaking about, it has become more a National Enquirer gossip column than anything else.
I am used to songs with layers in their meanings (and music), songs you can re-listen to and find something else new you hadn’t heard and understood the first time, just like a book or a movie you want to read or watch again with the same pleasure of discovery. When it is too obvious, it gets tiresome very fast, it is disposable, and Taylor Swift writes very disposable songs – that’s probably why she has written so many of them already – not timeless or universal ones, as you can’t never pass the John Mayer or-I-don’t-know-who-else reference.
Every time I imagine Taylor Swift, I see pink hearts written on hands, blond maned creatures surrounded by glittering rainbows on a wall of a 13-year-old girl's room, and this ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’ song doesn't escape the rule, it has no depth, it is another one-dimension song about Swift’s exhausting dating life, running the same cliché story and the same trite music, vaguely country, and more and more poppy these days. But it will set chart records, because people like easy things, and will always prefer cheap romantic novels to Dostoyevsky. Listen to it and tell me I am wrong, I know that Iman will:
