One of the other bands playing at the Constellation room in the Observatory on Wednesday night, was Sederra, a plain and good punk-rock band, which played a set full of energetic songs with uplifting hooks and poppy melodies à la Green Day.
The Fullerton-based quintet may be a local band, but they had attracted some serious fans. They dedicated their show to one of their friends who had just died in a motorcycle accident, but far from letting the mood down, as their set had some explosive and joyous punk songs with sometimes a light touch of hardcore, but never in an overwhelming way. Tom Schmitt’s delivery was more singing than screaming, and the songs had some serious foot tapping potential, but the attitude was still dynamic-punk, with a few brief stop-and-start in the middle of the songs.
A few months ago, the band and other local acts, put together a memorial concert and a canned food drive to honor Kelly Thomas, a 37-year-old homeless man who was beaten to death by the police, a sad story which soon received national attention…. And this says a lot about them.
There were two guitarists and the one in front of me, looked extremely serious and concentrated during the whole set, despite their powerhouse set and the dynamic moves of the other band members. A guy wearing a Misfits-T.S.O.L.-Clash jacket jumped on stage to sing with Schmitt, who called him his no 1 fan, and the ambiance till the end stayed very friendly with gentle moshing and an energy settling in the happy side without being dangerous,… after all Schmitt was wearing a ‘Good Times’ t-shirt.
With loud departures, jumping riffs, and even ooo-aaa-ooo-aaa multi-vocal choruses, they knew how to deliver these rocking melodic lines with a punk attitude and some efficiency inherited from their numerous influences.
